ENGLAND & WALES CONSUMER CCJs FALL BY 28 PERCENT IN Q4 2020 COMPARED TO SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR - BUT NUMBERS ARE RISING SHARPLY AGAIN
The number of County Court Judgments (CCJs) issued against consumers in the fourth quarter of 2020 fell 28 percent, from 268,858 to 194,102, compared to the same quarter in 2019, according to figures released today (08.01.2021) by Registry Trust.
The total value of CCJs registered fell by 25 percent to £342 million in Q4 2020, down from £458 million in Q4 2019. The average value of judgments rose slightly by over three percent from £1,705 to £1,761. The median value also rose from £792 to £841, an increase of over six percent.
But, it is worth noting that the number of CCJs issued against consumers in the last quarter of 2020 was 73 percent higher than in the third quarter of 2020.
The number of High Court consumer judgments rose by 87 percent, from 31 to 58, over the period. The total value saw a smaller rise of 15 percent from £47 million to £54million. As a result, the average value fell by 38 percent from £1.5 million to just under £1 million (£934,887). In contrast, the median value rose from £40,306 to £51,251. The smaller number of High Court judgments means that data can be subject to large fluctuations.
The number of judgments marked as ‘satisfied’ in Q4 2020 was 42,794, a fall of nearly 12 percent from the 48,420 in Q4 2019. As the number of judgments registered in Q4 2020 was lower than in Q4 2019, the proportion of judgments marked as satisfied has risen. But, it remains very low at 17.3 percent.
Registry Trust Chair, Mick McAteer, said: “Government and regulator interventions, and forbearance by creditors, in response to the Covd-19 crisis clearly protected households during most of 2020. But, as we feared, the numbers of CCJs rose sharply in the last quarter of 2020 as the damage to household finances by the economic crisis worked through the system. The fact that the number of judgments marked as satisfied fell is a real cause for concern as it could adversely affect households’ future access to affordable credit”.
