Q1 2024 Statistics

Overview

The total number of commercial and consumer judgments registered in the British Isles in Q1 2024 was 279,785. This total number excludes England and Wales High Court Judgments, Scotland Ordinary Causes and Northern Ireland High Court Judgments. Comparing the same quarter last year, there was a 7% increase. 46,003 judgments were ‘satisfied’, a year-on-year decrease of 4%.

98% of all judgments processed were from the England and Wales jurisdiction.

The total value of judgments across all jurisdictions in Q1 2024 was £729 million, a year-on-year increase of 40%.

ENGLAND AND WALES:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the total value of those judgments registered in England and Wales increased in Q1 2024, as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments increased by 7%, from 256,122 in Q1 2023 to 273,896 in Q1 2024. This quarter, the total value of judgments stood at £541 million, an increase of 13% from the same period last year.

  • Consumer judgments in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 6%, from 223,372 in Q1 2023 to 237,127 in Q1 2024. The value of debt against consumers also increased by 11%, from £360 million to £400 million. The average value of debt against consumers increased by 5%, from £1,611 to £1,688.

  • Commercial judgments in England and Wales:

The number of judgments in England and Wales has increased by 12%, from 32,765 in Q1 2023 to 36,784 in Q1 2024. The total value of debt also increased by 17%, from £121 million in Q1 2023 to £141 million in Q1 2024. The average value of debt increased from £3,678 to £3,832, an increase of 4%.

  • Corporate business debt in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 25,559 in Q1 2023 to 30,515 in Q1 2024, an increase of 19%. The total value of debt against businesses increased by 21% year-on-year, from £97 million in Q1 2023 to £118 million in Q1 2024. The average value of debt also increased only by 1%, from £3,806 in Q1 2023 to £3,859 in Q1 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in England and Wales

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses have seen a 13% decrease from the same period last year, from 7,206 to 6,269. The total value of debt for non-corporate judgments also decreased by 0.2%, from £23.2 million in Q1 2023, compared to £23.1 million in Q1 2024. However, the average value of debt increased from £3,224 to £3,699, an increase of 15%.

SCOTLAND:

Overview:

Both the number of decrees and the total value of those decrees registered in Scotland decreased in Q1 2024, as compared to the same period last year.

The number of decrees registered in Scotland saw a decrease of 15% this quarter from the same period last year, from 3,879 in Q1 2023 to 3,290 in Q1 2024. The total value of debt also decreased by 10%, from £6.7 million to £6 million. However, the average value of debt increased year- on- year by 6%, from £1,719 to £1,828.

  • Consumer judgments in Scotland:

The total number of decrees registered against Scottish consumers decreased by 8%, from 2,967 in Q1 2023 to 2,715 in Q1 2024. The total value of consumer debt has also decreased by 10%, from £5.5 million in Q1 2023 to £4.9 million in Q1 2024. The average value of consumer debt decreased by 1%, from £1,837 in Q1 2023 to £1,811 in Q1 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in Scotland:

The number of business decrees in Scotland saw a decrease of 37%, from 912 in Q1 2023 to 575 in Q1 2024. The total value of business debt also decreased by 10%, from £1.2 million in Q1 2023 to £1 million in Q1 2024. However, the average value of debt saw an increase of 43%, from £1,336 to £1,908.

  • Corporate business debt in Scotland:

The total number of decrees against corporate businesses decreased from 826 to 461 year-on-year, a reduction of 44%. The total value of debt against corporate businesses also decreased by 21%, from £1 million in Q1 2023 to £804,076 in Q1 2024. However, the average value of debt increased by 41%, from £1,236 in Q1 2023 to £1,744 in Q1 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Scotland:

The number of decrees against non-corporate businesses saw an increase by 33% compared to the same period last year, from 86 in Q1 2023 to 114 in Q1 2024. The total value of debt against these businesses also increased by 48%, from £198,014 in Q1 2023 to £293,076 in Q1 2024. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses saw an increase of 12%, from £2,302 to £2,571.

NORTHERN IRELAND:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the total value of those judgments registered in Northern Ireland increased in Q1 2024, as compared to the same period last year.

The number of judgments increased from 1,381 in Q1 2023 to 1,545 in Q1 2024, an increase of 12%. The total value of debt increased from £3.3 million in Q1 2023 to £5.3 million in Q1 2024, an increase of 61%. The average value also increased by 44%, from £2,358 to £3,403.

  • Consumer judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in Northern Ireland increased year-on-year by 41%, from 907 in Q1 2023 to 1,282 in Q1 2024. The total value of consumer debt increased by 76%, from £2.3 million in Q1 2023 to £4 million in Q1 2024. The average value of consumer debt also increased by 24%, from £2,508 in Q1 2023 to £3,118 in Q1 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of commercial judgments in Northern Ireland decreased by 45%, from 474 in Q1 2023 to 263 in Q1 2024. However, the total value of business debt increased from £981,143 in Q1 2023 to £1.3 million in Q1 2024, an increase of 28%. The average value of debt also increased by 131%, from £2,070 in Q1 2023 to £4,790 in Q1 2024.

  • Corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses decreased from 461 in Q1 2023 to 230 in Q1 2024, a decrease of 50%. However, the value of debt against corporate businesses increased by 21%, from £954,770 in Q1 2023 to £1.2 million in Q1 2024. The average value of corporate debt increased by 142%, from £2,071 in Q1 2023 to £5,004 to Q1 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against non-corporate businesses increased by 154% compared to the same period last year, from 13 in Q1 2023 to 33 in Q1 2024. The value of debt against these businesses decreased from £26,373 in Q1 2023 to £108,835 in Q1 2024, a 313% rise. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses increased by 63%, from £2,029 in Q1 2023 to £3,298 in Q1 2024.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the total value of those judgments registered in Republic Ireland increased in Q1 2024, as compared to the same period last year.

The number of judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland saw an increase of 50%, from 409 in Q1 2023 to 616 in Q1 2024. The total value increased by 505%, from €28 million in Q1 2023 to €172 million Q1 2024. The average value of judgments also increased by 302%, from €69,548 in Q1 2023 to €279,576 in Q1 2024.

  • Consumer judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 30%, from 282 in Q1 2023 to 366 in Q1 2024. The total value of consumer debt also increased by 564%, from €25 million in Q1 2023 to €168 million in Q1 2024. The average value of consumer debt saw an increase of 412% from €89,593 in Q1 2023 to €458,313 in Q1 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of business judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland increased by 97%, from 127 in Q1 2023 to 250 in Q1 2024. The total value of business debt also saw an increase of 41%, from €3.2 million in Q1 2023 to €4.5 million in Q1 2024. However, the average value of business debt decreased by 28%, from €25,038 in Q1 2023 to €17,904 in Q1 2024.

  • Corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased by 127%, from 97 in Q1 2023 to 220 in Q1 2024. The value of debt against these businesses also increased by 40%, from €3 million in Q1 2023 to €4.3 million in Q1 2024. However, the average value of debt saw a decrease of 38%, from €31,398 in Q1 2023 to €19,361 in Q1 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses saw no change compared to the same period last year and remained at 30. The value of debt against these businesses increased from €134,156 in Q1 2023 to €216,589 in Q1 2024, an rise of 61%. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses also increased by 61%, from €4,472 in Q1 2023 to €7,220 in Q1 2024.

JERSEY:

Overview:

The total number of judgments decreased from 394 in Q1 2023 to 347 in Q1 2024, a drop of 12%. However, the total value of debt also increased from £595,739 in Q1 2023 to £1.2 million Q1 2024, a rise of 94%. The average value of business debt increased by 120%, from £1,512 in Q1 2023 to £3,323 in Q1 2024.

  • Consumer judgments in Jersey:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers decreased by 13%, from 358 in Q1 2023 to 312 in Q1 2024. The value of consumer debt increased by 5%, from £474,121 in Q1 2023 to £498,938 in Q1 2024. The average value of consumer debt increased by 21% from the same period last year, from £1,324 in Q1 2023 to £1,599 in Q1 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in Jersey:

The number of business judgments registered in Jersey decreased by 3%, from 36 in Q1 2023 to 35 in Q1 2024. The total value of business debt increased by 438% from £121,618 in Q1 2023 to £654,113 in Q1 2024. The average value of business debt also increased by 453%, from £3,378 in Q1 2023 to £18,689 in Q1 2024.

  • Corporate business debt in Jersey:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses decreased by 37%, from 30 in Q1 2023 to 19 in Q1 2024. The total value of debt against these businesses increased by 355%, from £111,517 in Q1 2023 to £506,852 in Q1 2024. The average value of debt also increased by 618%, from £3,717 in Q1 2023 to £26,676 in Q1 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Jersey:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses increased by 167%, compared to the same period last year, from 6 in Q1 2023 to 16 in Q1 2024. The total value of debt against these businesses also increased by 1358%, from £10,101 in Q1 2023 to £147,261 in Q1 2024. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses also increased by 447%, from £1,684 in Q1 2023 to £9,204 in Q1 2024.

ISLE OF MAN:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments registered and the value of debt in the Isle of Man increased, compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments increased from 46 in Q1 2023 to 91 in Q1 2024, a rise of 98%. The total value of debt also increased by 93%, from £1.4 million in Q1 2023 to £2.8 million in Q1 2024.

  • Consumer judgments in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 95%, from 37 in Q1 2023 to 72 in Q1 2024. The total value of consumer debt also saw an increase of 198%, from £192,643 in Q1 2023 to £574,624 in Q1 2024. The average value of consumer debt also saw an increase of 53%, from £5,207 in Q1 2023 to £7,981 in Q1 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in the Isle of Man:

The number of business judgments registered in the Isle of Man increased by 111%, compared to the same period last year, from 9 in Q1 2023 to 19 in Q1 2024. The total value of business debt has also seen an increase of 77%, compared to the same period last year, from £1.2 million in Q1 2023 to £2.2 million in Q1 2024. However, the average value of business debt decreased by 16%, from £138,268 in Q1 2023 to £115,925 in Q1 2024.

  • Corporate business debt in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against corporate businesses increased by 100%, from 7 in Q1 2023 to 14 in Q1 2024. The total value of corporate debt also saw an increase of 76%, from £1.2 million in Q1 2023 to £2.2 million in Q1 2024. However, the average value of corporate debt experienced a decrease of 12%, from £176,004 in Q1 2023 to £154,694 in Q1 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against non-corporate businesses has increased from 2 judgments in Q1 2023 to 5 in Q1 2024, an increase of 150%. The total value of debt against these businesses also increased by 198%, from £12,381 in Q1 2023 to £36,872 in Q1 2024. The average value of non-corporate debt experienced an increase, from £6,191 in Q1 2023 to £7,374 in Q1 2024, a rise of 19%.
