Overview

The total number of commercial and consumer judgments registered in the British Isles in Q2 2024 was 240,342. This total number excludes England and Wales High Court Judgments, Scotland Ordinary Causes and Northern Ireland High Court Judgments. Comparing the same quarter last year, there was a 12% decrease. 45,991 judgments were ‘satisfied’, a year-on-year increase of 3%.

97% of all judgments processed were from the England and Wales jurisdiction.

The total value of judgments across all jurisdictions in Q2 2024 was £571 million, a year-on-year increase of 14%.

ENGLAND AND WALES:

Overview:

The total number of judgments decreased by 13%, from 268,109 in Q2 2023 to 233,460 in Q2 2024. This quarter, the total value of judgments stood at £537 million, an increase of 12% from the same period last year.

  • Consumer judgments in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers decreased by 19%, from 234,768 in Q2 2023 to 190,023 in Q2 2024. The value of debt against consumers increased by 6%, from £364 million to £387 million. The average value of debt against consumers also increased by 31%, from £1,550 to £2,038.

  • Commercial judgments in England and Wales:

The number of judgments in England and Wales has increased by 30%, from 33,361 in Q2 2023 to 43,445 in Q2 2024. The total value of debt also increased by 32%, from £113 million in Q2 2023 to £149 million in Q2 2024. The average value of debt increased from £3,389 to £3,438, an increase of 1.4%.

  • Corporate business debt in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 27,326 in Q2 2023 to 37,082 in Q2 2024, an increase of 36%. The total value of debt against businesses increased by 44% year-on-year, from £88 million in Q2 2023 to £127 million in Q2 2024. The average value of debt also increased only by 5%, from £3,235 in Q2 2023 to £3,427 in Q2 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in England and Wales

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses have seen a 5% increase from the same period last year, from 6,035 to 6,363. The total value of debt for non-corporate judgments decreased by 10%, from £24.7 million in Q2 2023, compared to £22.3 million in Q2 2024. The average value of debt also decreased from £4,087 to £3,501, a drop of 14%.

SCOTLAND:

Overview:

The number of decrees registered in Scotland saw an increase of 7% this quarter from the same period last year, from 3,907 in Q2 2023 to 4,170 in Q1 2024. The total value of debt saw a small decrease of 1%, from £7.4 million to £7.3 million. The average value of debt also decreased year-on- year by 7%, from £1,901 to £1,763.

  • Consumer judgments in Scotland:

The total number of decrees registered against Scottish consumers saw a small decrease of 0.1%, from 3,111 in Q2 2023 to 3,109 in Q2 2024. The total value of consumer debt has also decreased by 5%, from £6.2 million in Q2 2023 to £5.9 million in Q2 2024. The average value of consumer debt decreased by 5%, from £1,999 in Q2 2023 to £1,896 in Q2 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in Scotland:

The number of business decrees in Scotland saw an increase of 33%, from 796 in Q2 2023 to 1,061 in Q2 2024. The total value of business debt also increased by 21%, from £1.2 million in Q2 2023 to £1.5 million in Q2 2024. However, the average value of debt saw a decrease of 10%, from £1,520 to £1,375.

  • Corporate business debt in Scotland:

The total number of decrees against corporate businesses increased from 695 to 976 year-on-year, a rise of 40%. The total value of debt against corporate businesses also increased by 26%, from £1 million in Q2 2023 to £1.27 million in Q2 2024. However, the average value of debt decreased by 10%, from £1,451 in Q2 2023 to £1,302 in Q2 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Scotland:

The number of decrees against non-corporate businesses saw a decrease by 16% compared to the same period last year, from 101 in Q2 2023 to 85 in Q2 2024. The total value of debt against these businesses also decreased by 7%, from £201,426 in Q2 2023 to £187,924 in Q2 2024. However, the average value of debt against non-corporate businesses saw an increase of 11%, from £1,994 to £2,211.

NORTHERN IRELAND:

Overview:

The number of judgments decreased from 1,771 in Q2 2023 to 1,454 in Q2 2024, a drop of 18%. However, the total value of debt increased from £3.9 million in Q2 2023 to £4.1 million in Q2 2024, an increase of 6%. The average value also increased by 29%, from £2,202 to £2,835.

  • Consumer judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in Northern Ireland decreased year-on-year by 9%, from 1,188 in Q2 2023 to 1,078 in Q2 2024. The total value of consumer debt increased by only 2%, from £2.83 million in Q2 2023 to £2.88 million in Q2 2024. The average value of consumer debt also increased by 12%, from £2,385 in Q2 2023 to £2,677 in Q2 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of commercial judgments in Northern Ireland decreased by 36%, from 583 in Q2 2023 to 376 in Q2 2024. However, the total value of business debt increased from £1 million in Q2 2023 to £1.2 million in Q2 2024, an increase of 16%. The average value of debt also increased by 80%, from £1,830 in Q2 2023 to £3,289 in Q2 2024.

  • Corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses decreased from 560 in Q2 2023 to 322 in Q2 2024, a decrease of 43%. However, the value of debt against corporate businesses increased by 6%, from £1 million in Q2 2023 to £1.1 million in Q2 2024. The average value of corporate debt also increased by 84%, from £1,831 in Q2 2023 to £3,369 to Q2 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against non-corporate businesses increased by 135% compared to the same period last year, from 23 in Q2 2023 to 54 in Q2 2024. The value of debt against these businesses also increased from £41,686 in Q2 2023 to £151,812 in Q2 2024, a 264% rise. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses increased by 55%, from £1,812 in Q2 2023 to £2,811 in Q2 2024.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND:

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland saw an increase of 106%, from 438 in Q2 2023 to 902 in Q2 2024. The total value increased by 64%, from €12.8 million in Q2 2023 to €21 million Q2 2024. However, the average value of judgments also decreased by 20%, from €29,170 in Q2 2023 to €23,277 in Q2 2024.

  • Consumer judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 78%, from 274 in Q2 2023 to 487 in Q2 2024. The total value of consumer debt also increased by 65%, from €8.9 million in Q2 2023 to €14.6 million in Q2 2024. However, the average value of consumer debt saw a decrease of 7% from €32,346 in Q2 2023 to €30,061 in Q2 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of business judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland increased by 153%, from 164 in Q2 2023 to 415 in Q2 2024. The total value of business debt also saw an increase of 62%, from €3.9 million in Q2 2023 to €6.4 million in Q2 2024. However, the average value of business debt decreased by 36%, from €23,863in Q2 2023 to €15,316in Q2 2024.

  • Corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased by 196%, from 118 in Q2 2023 to 349 in Q2 2024. The value of debt against these businesses also increased by 134%, from €2.4 million in Q2 2023 to €5.7 million in Q2 2024. However, the average value of debt saw a decrease of 21%, from €20,616 in Q2 2023 to €16,294 in Q2 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses increase of 43%, from 46 in Q2 2023 to 66 in Q2 2024. However, the value of debt against these businesses decreased from €1.5 million in Q2 2023 to €669,633 in Q2 2024, a drop of 55%. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses also decreased by 68%, from €32,192 in Q2 2023 to €10,146 in Q2 2024.

JERSEY:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments registered and the value of debt in the Jersey increased, compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments increased from 286 in Q2 2023 to 312 in Q2 2024, a rise of 9%. The total value of debt also increased from £619,944 in Q2 2023 to £1.4 million Q2 2024, a rise of 126%. The average value of business debt increased by 108%, from £2,168 in Q2 2023 to £4,499 in Q2 2024.

  • Consumer judgments in Jersey:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 4%, from 257 in Q2 2023 to 267 in Q2 2024. The value of consumer debt increased by 159%, from £333,702 in Q2 2023 to £864,133 in Q2 2024. The average value of consumer debt increased by 149% from the same period last year, from £1,298 in Q2 2023 to £3,236 in Q2 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in Jersey:

The number of business judgments registered in Jersey increased by 55%, from 29 in Q2 2023 to 45 in Q2 2024. The total value of business debt increased by 88% from £286,242 in Q2 2023 to £539,619 in Q2 2024. The average value of business debt also increased by 21%, from £9,870 in Q2 2023 to £11,992 in Q2 2024.

  • Corporate business debt in Jersey:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased by 76%, from 21 in Q2 2023 to 37 in Q2 2024. The total value of debt against these businesses increased by 106%, from £253,387 in Q2 2023 to £521,247 in Q2 2024. The average value of debt also increased by 17%, from £12,066 in Q2 2023 to £14,088 in Q2 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Jersey:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses experienced no change compared to the same period last year with remaining at 8. The total value of debt against these businesses also decreased by 44%, from £32,855 in Q2 2023 to £18,372 in Q2 2024. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses also decreased by 44%, from £4,107 in Q2 2023 to £2,297 in Q2 2024.

ISLE OF MAN:

Overview:

The total number of judgments decreased from 52 in Q1 2023 to 44 in Q2 2024, a drop of 15%. The total value of debt also increased by 209%, from £166,119 in Q2 2023 to £512,731 in Q2 2024.

  • Consumer judgments in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers decreased by 5%, from 40 in Q2 2023 to 38 in Q2 2024. The total value of consumer debt also saw an increase of 267%, from £106,964 in Q2 2023 to £392,649 in Q2 2024. The average value of consumer debt also saw an increase of 286%, from £2,674 in Q2 2023 to £10,333 in Q2 2024.

  • Commercial judgments in the Isle of Man:

The number of business judgments registered in the Isle of Man decreased by 50%, compared to the same period last year, from 12 in Q2 2023 to 6 in Q2 2024. The total value of business debt has also seen an increase of 103%, compared to the same period last year, from £59,155 in Q2 2023 to £120,082 in Q2 2024. The average value of business debt increased by 306%, from £4,930 in Q2 2023 to £20,014 in Q2 2024.

  • Corporate business debt in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against corporate businesses decreased by 70%, from 10 in Q2 2023 to 3 in Q2 2024. The total value of corporate debt saw an increase of 107%, from £53,669 in Q2 2023 to £110,889 in Q2 2024. The average value of corporate debt experienced an increase of 589%, from £5,367 in Q2 2023 to £36,963 in Q2 2024.

  • Non-corporate business debt in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against non-corporate businesses has increased from 2 judgments in Q2 2023 to 3 in Q2 2024, an increase of 50%. The total value of debt against these businesses also increased by 68%, from £5,486 in Q2 2023 to £9,193 in Q2 2024. The average value of non-corporate debt also experienced an increase, from £2,743 in Q2 2023 to £3,064 in Q2 2024, an increase of 12%.
