Q3 2023 Statistics
Overview
The total number of judgments registered in the British Isles in Q3 2023 was 259,343. This total number excludes England and Wales High Court Judgments, Scotland Ordinary Causes and Northern Ireland High Court Judgments. Comparing the same quarter last year there was a 14.6% increase. 43,575 judgments were ‘satisfied’ a year-on-year decrease of 5.8%.
97.59% of all judgments processed were from the England and Wales jurisdiction.
The total value of judgments across all jurisdictions in Q3 2023 was £547,826,383, a year-on-year increase of 18%.
ENGLAND AND WALES:
Overview:
Both the number of judgments and the total value of those judgments registered in England and Wales increased in Q3 2023 as compared to the same period last year.
The total number of judgments increased by 15%, from 219,437 in Q3 2022 to 253,093 in Q3 2023. This quarter the total value of judgments stood at £516,028,396 an increase of 18% from the same period last year.
- Consumer judgments in England and Wales:
The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 15.7%, from 193,670 in Q3 2022 to 224,152 in Q3 2023. The value of debt against consumers also increased by 15.6%, from £338.2 million to £391 million. However, the average value of debt against consumers decreased slightly by 0.12%, from £ £1,746 to £ £1,744.
- Commercial judgments in England and Wales:
The number of business judgments in England and Wales has increased by 12%, from 25,788 in Q3 2022 to 28,941 in Q3 2023. The total value of debt also increased by 26.3%, from £99 million in Q3 2022 to £125 million in Q3 2023. The average value of debt also increased from, £3,839 to £4,321 a rise of 12.5%.
- Corporate business debt in England and Wales:
The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 19,080 in Q3 2022 to 22,328 in Q3 2023, an increase of 17%. The total value of debt against businesses increased by 28.5% year-on-year, from £79.7 million in Q3 2022 to £102.4 million in Q3 2023. The average value of debt also increased by 9.8%, from £4,175 in Q3 2022 to £4,585 in Q3 2023.
- Non-corporate business debt in England and Wales
The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen a slight 1.4% decrease from the same period last year, from 6,708 to 6,613. However, the total value of debt for non-corporate judgments increased 17%, from £19.4 million in Q3 2022 compared to £22.7 million in Q3 2023. The average value of debt also increased from £2,886 to £3,429, an increase of 18.8%.
SCOTLAND:
Overview:
The number of decrees registered in Scotland has seen a decrease of 23.9% this quarter from the same period last year, from 4,859 in Q3 2022 to 3,698 in Q3 2023. The total value of debt has decreased slightly by 2.9% from £7.1 million to £6.9 million. However, the average value of debt has increased year- on- year by 27.6%, from £1,464 to £1,869.
- Commercial judgments in Scotland:
The number of business decrees in Scotland saw decrease of 53.9%, from 1,599 in Q3 2022 to 738 in Q3 2023. The total value of business debt also decreased by 27.6%, from £1.6 million in Q3 2022 to £1.18 in Q3 2023. However, the average value of debt saw an increase of 56.8%, from £1,020 to £1,599.
- Corporate business debt in Scotland:
The total number of decrees against corporate businesses decreased from 1,484 to 627 year-on-year, a reduction of 57.8%. The total value of debt against corporate businesses also decreased by 33.5%, from £1.37 million in Q3 2022 to £912,282 in Q3 2023. However, the average value of debt increased by 57.5%, from £924 in Q3 2022 to £1,455 in Q3 2023.
- Non-corporate business debt in Scotland:
The number of decrees against non-corporate businesses saw a small decrease by 3.5% compared to the same period last year, from 115 in Q3 2022 to 111 in Q3 2023. However, the total value of debt against these businesses increased slightly by 3.3% from £259,406 in Q3 2022 to £268,021 in Q3 2023. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses saw a small increase of 7% from £2,256 to £2,415.
- Consumer judgments in Scotland:
The total number of decrees registered against Scottish consumers has decreased by 9.2%, from 3,260 in Q3 2022 to 2,960 in Q3 2023. However, the total value of consumer debt has seen a minor increase of 4.5%, from £5.48 million in Q3 2022 to £5.73 million in Q3 2023. The average value of consumer debt also rose by 15%, from £1,682 in Q3 2022 to £1,936 in Q3 2023.
NORTHERN IRELAND:
Overview:
Both the number of judgments and the total value of those judgments registered in Northern Ireland increased in Q3 2023 as compared to the same period last year.
The number of judgments increased from 1,248 in Q3 2022 to 1,707 in Q3 2023, an increase of 36.8%. The total value of debt also increased from £3.16 million in Q3 2022 to £3.95 million in Q3 2023, an increase of 25%. However, the average value decreased by 8.6%. from £2,530 to £2,314.
- Commercial judgments in Northern Ireland:
The total number of business judgments in Northern Ireland increased by 108%, from 220 in Q3 2022 to 458 in Q3 2023. The total value of business debt also increased from £792,484 in Q3 2022 to £964,711 in Q3 2023, an increase of 21.7%. The average value of debt experienced a decrease of 41.5%, from £3,602 in Q3 2022 to £2,106 in Q3 2023.
- Corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:
The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 194 in Q3 2022 to 427 in Q3 2023, an increase of 120%. The value of debt against corporate businesses also increased by 16.27% from £724,836 in Q3 2022 to £842,738 in Q3 2023. However, the average value of corporate debt decreased by 47%, from £3,736 in Q3 2022 to £1,974 to Q3 2023.
- Non-corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:
The total number of judgments against non-corporate businesses increased by 19% compared to the same period last year, from 26 in Q3 2022 to 31 in Q3 2023. The value of debt against these businesses also increased from £67,648 in Q3 2022 to £121,973 in Q3 2023, an 80% rise. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses also increased by 51%, from £2,602 in Q3 2022 to £3,935 in Q3 2023.

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in Northern Ireland increased year-on-year by 21.5%, from 1,028 in Q3 2022 to 1,249 in Q3 2023. The total value of consumer debt increased by 26%, from £2,37 million in Q3 2022 to £2.98 million in Q3 2023. The average value of consumer debt also decreased by 41.5%, from £3,602 in Q3 2022 to £2,106 in Q3 2023.
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND:
Overview:
The number of judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland saw an increase of 56.45% from 349 in Q3 2022 to 546 in Q3 2023. The total value of increased by 35.44%, from €14.58 million in Q3 2022 to €19.75 million Q3 2023. However, the average value of judgments decreased by 13.42%, from €41,780 in Q3 2022 to €36,171 in Q3 2023.
- Consumer judgments in Republic of Ireland:
The number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 52.77%, from 235 in Q3 2022 to 359 in Q3 2023. The total value of consumer debt increased by 29.3% from €12.6 million in Q3 2022 to €16.3 million in Q3 2023. However, the average value of consumer debt saw a reduction of 15.36% from €53,773 in Q3 2022 to €45,514 in Q3 2023.
- Commercial judgments in Republic of Ireland:
The number of business judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland increased by 64%, from 114 in Q3 2022 to 187 in Q3 2023. The total value of business debt has also seen an increase of 75.35% from €1.94 million in Q3 2022 to €3.4 million in Q3 2023. The average value of business debt also experienced a small increase of 6.9%, from €17,058 in Q3 2022 to €18,234 in Q3 2023.
- Corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:
The total number of judgments against corporate businesses has increased 86.75%, from 83 in Q3 2022 to 155 in Q3 2023. The value of debt against these businesses also increased by 80% from €1.67 million in Q3 2022 to €3 million in Q3 2023. The average value of debt saw a small decreased 3.58% from €20,134 in Q3 2022 to €19,412 in Q3 2023.
- Non-corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:
The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen a minor increase of 3.23% as compared to the same period last year, from 31 in Q3 2022 to 32 in Q3 2023. The value of debt against these businesses also increased from €273,492 in Q3 2022 to €400,882 in Q3 2023, an increase of 46.58%. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses increased by 42% from €8,822 in Q3 2022 to €12,528 in Q3 2023.
JERSEY:
Overview:
Both the number of judgments registered and the total value in Jersey saw an increase compared to the same period last year.
The total number of judgments increased, from 230 in Q3 2022 to 290 in Q3 2023, a rise of 26%. The total value of debt also increased from £963,101 in Q3 2022 to £1.1 million Q3 2023, a rise of 16.82%. However, the average value of business debt decreased by 7.35%, from £4,187 in Q3 2022 to £3,880 in Q3 2023.
- Consumer judgments in Jersey:
The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 35%, from 186 in Q3 2022 to 251 in Q3 2023. The value of consumer debt also increased by 24%, from £554,991 in Q3 2022 to £689,747 in Q3 2023. However, the average value of consumer debt fell by 7.9% from the same period last year, from £2,984 in Q3 2022 to £2,748 in Q3 2023.

The number of business judgments registered in Jersey decreased by 11.36%, from 44 in Q3 2022 to 39 in Q3 2023. However, the total value of business debt increased slightly by 6.7% from £408,110 in Q3 2022 to £435,355 in Q3 2023. The average value of business debt also increased by 20.35%, from £9,275 in Q3 2022 to £11,163 in Q3 2023.
- Non-corporate business debt in Jersey:
The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses decreased by 41% compared to the same period last year, from 17 in Q3 2022 to 10 in Q3 2023. The total value of debt against these businesses decreased by 82%, from £97,167 in Q3 2022 to £17,194 in Q3 2023. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses also decreased by 69.9%, from £5,716 in Q3 2022 to £1,719in Q3 2023.

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased by 7.4%, from 27 in Q3 2022 to 29 in Q3 2023. The total value of debt against these businesses increased by 34.48%, from £310,943 in Q3 2022 to £418,161 in Q3 2023. The average value of debt also increased by 25%, from £11,516 in Q3 2022 to £14,419 in Q3 2023.
ISLE OF MAN:
Overview:
The number of judgments registered in the Isle of Man increased as compared to the same period last year. The value of debt has decreased year-on-year.
The total number of judgments decreased from 102 in Q3 2022 to 9 in Q3 2023, a fall of 91%. The total value of debt also decreased by 78%, from £295,527 in Q3 2022 to £64,012 in Q3 2023.
- Commercial judgments in the Isle of Man:
The number of business judgments registered in the Isle of Man decreased by 76.47% compared to the same period last year, from 17 in Q3 2022 to 4 in Q3 2023. The total value of business debt has also seen a decrease of 44.06% as compared to the same period last year, from £72,428 in Q3 2022 to £40,516 in Q3 2023. However, the average value of business debt increased by 137.74%, from £4,260.47 in Q3 2022 to £10,129 in Q3 2023.

The total number of judgments registered against corporate businesses decreased by 100%, from 12 in Q3 2022 to 0 in Q3 2023. The total value of corporate debt saw a decrease of 100%, from £44,114 in Q3 2022 to £0 in Q3 2023. The average value of corporate debt also experienced a decrease of 100%, from £3,676 in Q3 2022 to £0 in Q3 2023.

The total number of judgments registered against non-corporate businesses has decreased from 5 judgments in Q3 2022 to 4 in Q3 2023. However, the total value of debt against these businesses increased from £28,314 in Q3 2022 to £40,516 in Q3 2023. The average value of non-corporate debt experienced a rise from £5,663 in Q3 2022 to £10,129 in Q3 2023, rise of 78.87%.

The average value of consumer debt saw an increase of 79.04%, from £2,625 in Q3 2022 to £4,699 in Q3 2023.
