Q4 and Year 2022 Statistics

Overview

The total number of judgments registered in the UK in 2022 was 899,257, 212,523 of which were processed in Q4 2022. Compared to same period last year, the total number of judgments in this quarter decreased marginally from 213,578 to 212,523. The total number of ‘satisfied’ (or fully paid) judgments in this quarter was 42,324, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 7%.

97.2% of all judgments processed were from the England and Wales jurisdiction.

The total value of judgments across all jurisdictions annually was £2,542,263,624. £670,067,711 of this total was processed in Q4 2022.

ENGLAND AND WALES:

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in England and Wales decreased in Q4 2022 as compared to the same period last year. However, the total value of debt has seen an increase year-on-year.

The total number of judgments fell from 208,651 in Q4 2021 to 205,653 in Q4 2022, a marginal decrease of 1.44%. However, the total value of debt has seen an increase of 24% year-on-year, from £517 million in Q4 2021 to £641 million in Q4 2022.

Commercial judgments in England and Wales:

The number of business judgments in England and Wales has increased by 20%, from 25,264 in Q4 2021 to 30,330 in Q4 2022.

The total value of business debt also rose by 4%, from £125 million in Q4 2021 to £129.3 million in Q4 2022.

The average value of business debt decreased by 13.5%, from £4,930.34 in Q4 2021 to £4,266.22 in Q4 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 18,690 in Q4 2021 to 24,314 in Q4 2022, an increase of 30%. However, the total value of debt against these businesses fell by 3%, from £104.5 million in Q4 2021 to £101 million in Q4 2022. The average value of debt decreased by 26%, from £5,591.99 in Q4 2021 to £4,164.99 in Q4 2022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in England and Wales:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen a decrease of 8% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 6,574 to 6,016. However, the total value of debt against these businesses has increased from £20 million to £28 million as compared to the same period last year, an increase of 40%. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses in England and Wales has seen a 53% rise as compared to the same period last year, from £3,049.27 in Q4 2021 to £4,675.37 in Q4 2022.

Consumer judgments in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in England and Wales has decreased by 4.40%, from 183,387 in Q4 2021 to 175,323 in Q4 2022. However, the total value of consumer debt has seen an increase of 31%, from £392 million in Q4 2021 to £512 million in Q4 2022. The average value of consumer debt also saw a rise of 36%, from £2,142.87 in Q4 2021 to £2,923.17 in Q4 2022.

SCOTLAND:

Overview:

The number of decrees and the total value of debt registered in Scotland have both seen an increase when compared to the same period last year.

The total number of decrees increased from 3,341 in Q4 2021 to 5,121 in Q4 2022, an increase of 53%. The value of debt has also increased, from £12.3 million in Q4 2021 to £16.6 million in Q4 2022, a rise of 35%.

Commercial judgments in Scotland:

The number of business judgments in Scotland has seen a dramatic increase of 202%, from 427 in Q4 2021 to 1,292 in Q4 2022.

The total value of business debt also rose by 89%, from £2.8 million in Q4 2021 to £5.2 million in Q4 2022.

However, the average value of debt against Scottish businesses decreased by 38%, from £6,464.38 in Q4 2021 to £4,037.44 in Q4 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in Scotland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 360 to 1,079 year-on-year, a dramatic increase of 200%. The total value of debt against those businesses also rose by 78%, from £2.4 million in Q4 2021 to £4.2 million in Q4 2022. However, the average value of debt fell by 41%, from £6,622.62 in Q4 2021 to £3,934.72 in Q4 2022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Scotland:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 218% as compared to the same period last year, from 67 in Q4 2021 to 213 in Q4 2022. The total value of debt against these businesses increased by 158% from £376,145 in Q4 2021 to £970,809 in Q4 2022. However, the average value of debt against non-corporate businesses has seen a 19% decrease from £5,614.10 in Q4 2021 to £4,557.79 in Q4 2022.

Consumer judgments in Scotland:

The total number of decrees registered against Scottish consumers has increased by 31%, from 2,914 in Q4 2021 to 3,829 in Q4 2022. The value of consumer debt has also seen an increase of 20%, from £9.5 million in Q4 2021 to £11.4 million in Q4 2022. The average value of consumer debt fell by 9%, from £3,275.47 in Q4 2021 to £2,966.97 in Q4 2022.

NORTHERN IRELAND:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in Northern Ireland increased as compared to the same period last year.

The number of judgments rose from 990 in Q4 2021 to 1,206 in Q4 2022, an increase of 22%. The total value of debt also increased, from £3.53 million in Q4 2021 to £4.12 million in Q4 2022, an increase of 17%.

Commercial judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of business judgments in Northern Ireland rose by a dramatic 141%, from 159 in Q4 2021 to 383 in Q4 2022.

The total value of business debt also rose from £1.16 million in Q4 2021 to £1.27 million in Q4 2022, an increase of 9.5%.

However, the average value of business debt fell by 55% from £7,268.09 in Q4 2021 to £3,306 in Q4 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses rose significantly from 135 in Q4 2021 to 355 in Q4 2022, an increase of 163%. However, the value of debt against those businesses only rose by 8%, from £1.11 million in Q4 2021 to £1.20 million in Q4 2022. The average value of corporate debt decreased by 59%, from £8,238.24 in Q4 2021 to £3,388.63 to Q4 2022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against non-corporate businesses increased by 17% compared to the same period last year, from 24 in Q4 2021 to 28 in Q4 2022. The value of debt against these businesses also increased from £43,463 in Q4 2021 to £63,235 in Q4 2022, a 45% increase. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses also rose by 25%, from £1,810.96 in Q4 2021 to £2,258.39 in Q4 2022.

Consumer judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in Northern Ireland decreased marginally from 831 in Q4 2021 to 823 in Q4 2022. However, the total value of consumer debt increased by 21%, from £2.4 million in Q4 2021 to £2.9 million in Q4 2022. The average value of consumer debt also rose by 21%, from £2,854.77 in Q4 2021 to £3,467.25 in Q4 2022.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND:

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland decreased compared to the same period last year. There has been a minimal increase in the total value of debt compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments fell from 343 in Q4 2021 to 252 in Q4 2022, a decrease of 27%. The total value of debt increased, from €6.4 million in Q4 2021 to €6.8 million in Q4 2022, an increase of 6.25%.

Commercial judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of business judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland decreased by 37%, from 126 in Q4 2021 to 80 in Q4 2022.

The total value of business debt has also seen a decline of 43%, from €2.54 million in Q4 2021 to €1.45 million in Q4 2022.

The average value of business debt fell by 10%, from €20,155.17 in Q4 2021 to €18,225.06 in Q4 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses has decreased by 20%, from 86 in Q4 2021 to 69 in Q4 2022. The value of debt against those businesses declined by 38%, from €2.18 million in Q4 2021 to €1.36 million in Q4 2022. The average value of debt also decreased by 22%, from €25,298.92 in Q4 2021 to €19,661.35 in Q4 2022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen a decrease of 73% as compared to the same period last year, from 40 in Q4 2021 to 11 in Q4 2022. The value of debt against these businesses also declined from €363,844 in Q4 2021 to €101,372 in Q4 2022, a decrease of 72%. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses has seen a minimal increase of 1.31%, from €9,096.10 in Q4 2021 to €9,215.64 in Q4 2022.

Consumer judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers decreased by 21%, from 217 in Q4 2021 to 172 in Q4 2022. However, the value of consumer debt has seen an increase of 38%, from €3.9 million in Q4 2021 to €5.3 million in Q4 2022. The average value of consumer debt also rose significantly by 75%, from €17,790.93 in Q4 2021 to €31,082.69 in Q4 2022.

JERSEY:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in Jersey increased as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments rose from 177 in Q4 2021 to 227 in Q4 2022, an increase of 28%. The total value of debt also increased, from £361,248 in Q4 2021 to £552,043 in Q4 2022, an increase of 53%.

Commercial judgments in Jersey:

The number of business judgments registered in Jersey remained unchanged as compared to the same period last year, the number being 30.

The total value of business debt declined by 16% from £157,975 in Q4 2021 to £132,144 in Q4 2022.

The average value of business debt also decreased by 16%, from £5,265.83 in Q4 2021 to £4,404.80 in Q4 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in Jersey:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses decreased by 30%, from 20 in Q4 2021 to 14 in Q4 2022. The total value of debt against those businesses also fell by 66%, from £144,291 in Q4 2021 to £48,887 in Q4 2022. The average value of debt decreased 52%, from £7,214.55 in Q4 2021 to £3,491.93 in Q4 2022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Jersey:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has increased from 10 to 16 as compared to the same period last year. The total value of debt against these businesses has increased by 508%, from £13,684 in Q4 2021 to £83,257 in Q4 2022. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses has seen a 280% increase, from £1,368.40 in Q4 2021 to £5,203.56 in Q4 2022.

Consumer judgments in Jersey:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 34%, from 147 in Q4 2021 to 197 in Q4 2022. The value of consumer debt increased dramatically by 107%, from £203,273 in Q4 2021 to £419,899 in Q4 2022. The average value of consumer debt increased by 54%, from £1,382.81 in Q4 2021 to £2,131.47 in Q4 2022.

ISLE OF MAN:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in the Isle of Man decreased as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments declined from 76 in Q4 2021 to 64 in Q4 2022, a decrease of 16%. The total value of debt also declined by 34%, from £184,846 in Q4 2021 to £121,969 in Q4 2022.

Commercial judgments in the Isle of Man:

The number of business judgments registered in the Isle of Man remained unchanged compared to the same period last year, the number being 12.

The total value of business debt has seen an increase of 17% as compared to the same period last year, from £41,730 in Q4 2021 to £48,795 in Q4 2022.

The average value of business debt also increased by 17%, from £3,477.50 in Q4 2021 to £4,066.25 in Q4 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against corporate businesses decreased by 40%, from 10 in Q4 2021 to 6 in Q4 2022. However, the total value of business debt has seen an increase of 94%, from £20,247 in Q4 2021 to £39,330 in Q4 2022. The average value of corporate debt dramatically increased by 224%, from £2,024.70 in Q4 2021 to £6,555.00 in Q4 2022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against non-corporate businesses has increased from 2 in Q4 2021 to 6 in Q4 2022. The total value of debt against these businesses decreased by 56%, from £21,483 in Q4 2021 to £9,465 in Q4 2022. The average value of non-corporate debt also fell by 85%, from £10,741.50 in Q4 2021 to £1,577.50 in Q4 2022.

Consumer judgments in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers decreased by 19%, from 64 in Q4 2021 to 52 in Q4 2022. The total value of consumer debt also fell by 49%, from £143,116 in Q4 2021 to £73,174 in Q4 2022. The average value of consumer debt declined by 37%, from £2,236.19 in Q4 2021 to £1,407.19 in Q4 2022.
